Technical reference data — teak (Tectona grandis)

Published reference values. They are not a product guarantee: they depend on species, tree age, site and drying.

Density at 12 % moisture content610–730 kg/m³ (range 480–850) — medium-weight wood
Plantation in Puerto Libertador (Córdoba)Oven-dry specific gravity 0.57 g/cm³ — moderately heavy wood; medium mechanical properties; when planing, raised grain is the most significant defect
Shrinkage, green → 12 %0.7–1.5 % radial · 1.1–2.5 % tangential
Shrinkage, green → oven-dry1.8–3.7 % radial · 3.2–6.2 % tangential
Strength and stiffnessBending (MOR) 81–196 N/mm² · modulus of elasticity (MOE) 7,600–17,500 N/mm² · compression parallel to grain 34–70 N/mm²
Janka hardness (side)3,700–4,890 N
DurabilityHeartwood durable to very durable; resistant to termites and fungi; the sapwood is susceptible to Lyctus. Class 1 above ground (over 40 years), class 2 in ground contact (15–25 years).
DryingDries well but slowly. 2.5 cm (1 in) boards from 40 % to 10 % in 5–6 days in a kiln at 60–80 °C.
Machining and finishingThe silica (up to 1.5 %) dulls tools: carbide tooling is recommended. Good nail and screw holding (pre-bore). Glue only on freshly planed or sanded surfaces. Varnishes and polishes well.
Plantation-grown woodHeartwood share: 35–55 % at 13 years, 55–65 % at 21 years, over 80 % beyond 50 years. Rotations shorter than 25 years may reduce timber quality.
UsesFine cabinetwork, furniture, doors and windows, flooring, staircases, boat building, decorative veneer, turning.

Published reference values. We did not find an official Colombian technical sheet for plantation eucalyptus from Córdoba; these figures come from other sources and are not a product guarantee: they depend on species, age, site and drying.

DensityMature natural-grown timber: 995 kg/m³ at 12 % moisture content. Plantation timber at 8.5 years is about 70 % as dense.
Hardness (Janka-type)12 kN for mature timber; 4.9 kN for 8.5-year plantation timber
Shrinkage to 12 % (8.5-year plantation)5.2 % tangential · 1.9 % radial
Species classificationStrength group S2 (unseasoned) / SD3 (seasoned). Durability: class 1 above ground (over 40 years), class 2 in ground contact (15–25 years). Termite resistant.
Drying and machiningDries satisfactorily by air and in a kiln. Machines well; accepts paint, stain and polish.
Colombian data point (Eucalyptus grandis)7-year-old clones in Smurfit Cartón de Colombia plantations (Restrepo, Pereira, Popayán): basic density 0.38–0.55 g/cm³. Andean region, not Córdoba.
UsesConstruction, framing, cladding, flooring, joinery, fencing, poles, furniture and outdoor furniture.
